Handloom weaving is a home-based traditional handcraft industry in Ethiopia that is a family affair which involves the women spinning the cotton and the men weaving the cloth. This weaving creates fresh and contemporary pieces with the dual aim of preserving the country’s long history of craftsmanship, while infusing the tradition with new inspirations.
Each product is handcrafted, woven, dyed, and embroidered by skilled artisans, ensuring integrity, beauty, and uniqueness a family craft, it is passed on from father to son. The vibrant, luxurious cotton textiles and colors are synonymous with the regions and locals automatically recognize the region a woven piece originates from. Additional decorations are jacquard done on the pieces to give them an extra chic finish.
In both Kenya and Ethiopia, handloom weaving is a source of employment for hundreds of artisans. woven cloth is known by different names; shemma cloth, gabbi, netela, habesha kemis, kikoi and so on.
