Baoule Ikat

Cote D'Ivore
The Baoule cloth is a vintage ikat made by master artisans from the Baule tribe of Ivory Coast. Handloom weaving is an important part of the Baoule African art talent that the artisans practice as a substitute source of income to subsistence farming. It is part of the community’s daily affair and involves both the young and old alike. Every complete panel is the work of several people working together towards a common end. The unique geometric patterns are result of this illustrious collaboration that unifies every weaving community and the ingenuity of the weaver’s imagination.
Master artisans remember learning the craft from their elders and they in turn look forward to teaching it to their kin and pass down this rich heritage. The Baoule cloth was mainly done in indigo but has evolved into a rich range of colour combinations. Cotton yarn is dyed in indigo using the warp ikat method, it is then handwoven into narrow strips, then stitched together into a whole cloth. Original cloth is 100% cotton even though there are some pieces that combine cotton and silk yarns
