Aso Oke
Nigeria
Handwoven, from Yorubaland, Nigeria. This is an intricate culturally rich traditional woven cloth from the Southwestern and South-eastern people of Nigeria and Benin respectively. It signifies the high social status of its wearer. When worn during special occasions and festivities, it’s beauty drawn from the collective uniformity in group dressing as an indication of solidarity among family members, age mates or a particular group of people. Special meanings are attached to patterns and colors used in the weaving of Aso Oke.
Dyed strands of yarn are hand loom woven into long strips of cloth that are then sewn together into a large piece of cloth. The more the amount of fabric and patterns used, the higher the wealth and status of the wearer.
