Raffia Weaving
Madagascar
Raffia is the fibre of leaves taken from the raffia palm, a tree native to Madagascar. Raffia handicrafts from Madagascar are based on her rich cultural heritage. Our handicrafts are done by female informal sector Malagasy craftspersons who do piecework at home. Raffia weaving provides them and opportunity to earn a good alternative income for family needs and gives the women flexibility while caring for their families and farming.
The Malagasy weavers are highly skilled and have a high level of dexterity that allows them to produce beautiful one of kind pieces. Every new design requires a series of trainings and samplings to master and achieve required standards. This is therefore a very hands-on affair that requires close monitoring and quality control.
